“Sunday Negotiation Insight”
Every day of your life, you should seek to be more successful!
Identify what aspect of your life do you seek to improve? That’s an important question because it leads to self-reflection per where you are in life and where you wish to be. In making such an assessment, you should also assess how you got where you are.
Recognize that you have the power within to change the direction of your life. Success leaves footprints. Thus, if you want your life to be more successful you need to understand intellectually how you came to possess the mindset that you have. Then, assess what it will take to change that mindset.
Accept where you are in life as your reality. Don’t wallow in self-pity, don’t blame others for your plight in life. Don’t allow yourself to become stressed out; stress kills! Accept where you are for the value that position holds. Then, look forward, not backward.
Embrace means accepting your reality for what it is. Don’t sugarcoat it. It’s yours. Before you can implement change, you have to accept yourself for who and what you are.
Change occurs when one is truly tired of where one is. It’s not until you get tired that you will you take the action required to change. Thus, always monitor your level of frustration per where you are in life versus where you’d like to be. For it’s within that measurement that the fuel for change will reside. Once change occurs turn it into momentum … and everything will be right with the world.
What does this have to do with negotiations?
In every negotiation (you’re always negotiating), to the degree you recognize it, you’re going through the steps of Identify, Recognize, Accept, Embrace, and Change. Be it identifying the offer the opposing negotiator is extending and recognizing it for the value it has, you’re going through the process. After you recognize the offer, you assess to what degree you’ll accept or reject it. Based on that decision you embrace the offer or offer to change it. Thus, the better you are at addressing the steps of Identify, Recognize, Accept, Embrace, and Change, the greater your negotiation outcomes will be … and everything will be right with the world.
Remember, you’re always negotiating!
