“To Thine Own Self Be True”

Who are you and what are you becoming? Part of that answer lies in what you’ve done and who you’ve been, but that’s only part of who you’ll become. Your past does not have to be prologue to your future unless you want it to be. Thus, you can become what you want, if you choose to do so. No matter where you are in life, if you don’t like that placement, change it. If you don’t want to be the person that you are, change to something that’s more aligned with who you wish to be. If you don’t like your plight in life, create another environment that’s more aligned with the station you feel is most appropriate.

When you’re feeling low, look high. If you want more from yourself, demand it. You can become more and transform the ‘you’ that you are to the ‘you’ that you want to be. Go for it! The sky is the limit until you reach it. Then you can become even more than you imagined.

There is so much left for you in your life. So, until you die, live your life to its fullest … and everything will be right with the world.

What does this have to do with negotiations?

In a negotiation, the opposing negotiator senses and assesses who you are and how far you’ll go to obtain what you want from the negotiation. To a degree, you engage in the negotiation based on how you see yourself, the persona you project, and the degree you believe in your abilities. Even if you present yourself as something other than what and who you are, you may feel like you’re channeling someone else. Good negotiators have the ability to do just that, channel something and/or someone other than themselves.

The point is, if you can do so during a negotiation, you can do so anytime in your life. After all, you’re always negotiating. So, be yourself when it serves you, or be someone that serves you best at the time. In being whomever you are at the time of being, you’re still authentic because you’re always moving from who you were to whom you’re becoming. So, be the ‘you’ that you want to be as you become the ‘you’ that you’ll be … and everything will be right with the world.

Remember, you’re always negotiating!
