“Sunday Negotiation Insight”
Have you ever felt besieged by doubt, a lack of self-worth, a sense that you’re not where you’d like to be? Hopefully you have, because if you haven’t, you haven’t tried to grow hard enough. You’ve been stuck in a comfort zone.
Not until you feel broken do you realize the opportunity for change and growth. The thing is, you have to be mindful of where you are in life, how you got there, and how you plan to get somewhere else.
So, when you’re in a place of despair, a place of loneliness, a place where you just don’t want to be, put a smile on your face, let joy reside in your heart, and then be grateful for the experience that made you wonder if you were broken. If you keep your focus on the positive, you’ll realize you’re not broken at all. You’re just going through the process of leaving behind the shell that was once you and becoming a more vibrant and self-assured person … and everything will be right with the world.
What does this have to do with negotiations?
Before and during a negotiation, maintain control of your mind, your mental perspective. In particular, stay focused on the positive aspects of the negotiation and don’t be overcome by negativity. If you experience a phase in the negotiation that you sense may lead to an impasse or negativity, go into a state of productive procrastination (i.e. don’t rush to create a solution), be reflective.
Don’t allow yourself to get stuck in a mental morass of doubt, fear, or despair. You may not be complete, but you’re not broken. Don’t allow yourself to think that way. Instead, think of offers that will serve you and the person with whom you’re negotiating. Believe in yourself … and everything will be right with the world.
Remember, you’re always negotiating!
